“We’re just a group of moms,” said
Maggie La Bove, cofounder with Nancy Dillard of Mothers Against
Cancer. “Moms who have a strong admiration for and tie to Texas
Children’s.”
Most recently, this group of “moms” in
Kingwood, Texas,
gave $377,000 to Texas Children’s Cancer Center and Hematology
Service® to support molecular oncology research. It’s the
largest gift Mothers Against Cancer has made to Texas Children’s–40
percent more than their annual contribution the previous year–and it
represents yet another generous contribution in a long line of
support.
Since 1989, Mothers Against Cancer has
given more than
$2.4 million to Texas Children’s Cancer Center to help find a cure
for childhood cancer. In addition to funding cutting-edge molecular
research, the organization’s annual contributions have helped
advance hematology and pharmacology research, as well as augment the
Long-term Survivor Program and Child Life activities in the Cancer
Center.
“I never thought it would go on for 19
years,” said LaBove,
noting the growth of the organization’s support since its first gift
of less than $10,000. She attributes the success of the annual
Christmas-season fundraising luncheon not only to members’
dedication but also to the generosity and efforts of many community
businesses and organizations.
In addition to financial contributions,
Mothers Against Cancer members donate their time to the Cancer
Center. Last December, on the day the group brought their annual
check to
the hospital, they also delivered holiday treats and gifts of all
kinds to patients.
“This organization is unique in that
there are no paid employees, so every penny of the money raised goes
directly to research,” said David Poplack, M.D., director of Texas
Children’s Cancer Center.
LaBove remarked in turn, “Dr. Poplack
is a gifted healer who has dedicated his life to curing children
with cancer. He has created a legacy, and it is something that you
really want to be a part of.”
Mothers Against Cancer’s story began
when Kingwood parents Trey and Sally Denman lost their 2-year-old
daughter, Ann, to leukemia. In her honor, friends and neighbors of
the
Denmans joined together to establish an organization devoted to
helping save the lives of children suffering from cancer.
“Now, we see our own daughters, the
future generations, joining our organization in the effort to cure
pediatric cancer,” LaBove said. “We believe in what Texas Children’s
is doing, and when you believe in something, you do what you can to
support it.”
